My latest story for @nytimestravel took me back to a city close to my heart. Twenty summers ago in Newport, I literally fell head over heels for @ecniv who got to watch me wipe out repeatedly as I tried to impress him with my surfing. Thanks to my editor @taceyrychter for this dream assignment and to @elizabeth.cecil for the beautiful photos. We had a bake sale today for the new environmental

We had a bake sale today for the new environmental club at Remy’s elementary school. The kids and I made brownies and salted tahini chocolate chip cookies and sold every last one of them, raising $165 in two hours and receiving a grant offer from a local consignment shop! Remy handed out brochures about the @pollinatorpathway and encouraged people to plant native plants and stop using pesticides on their lawns. #proudmama #gogreenteam #littleclimateactivist #bakesale #cookiesforacause #climateactionnow

Last night, while nearing the end of Lessons in Ch

Last night, while nearing the end of Lessons in Chemistry and wondering what to read next, I remembered that I accumulated a dreamy stack of books on our road trip from Connecticut to Atlantic Canada. Our family’s favorite vacation stops are libraries and indie/used bookstores, where we uncover great deals and literary adventures, but also meet locals who share fascinating stories and insider tips about their town. Remy and Evie loved lingering in the various kids book nooks and doing art, Lego and 3D printing projects in libraries alongside new friends. I have a particular weakness for library book sales, where you can find everything from old first editions to kids classics to new bestsellers for .50-$5!

People often ask how we keep the kids entertained on the road, and while we have more than a few tricks in our traveling toolbox (most recently, the screen-free @tonies.us was clutch), the truth is that books—and conversations about them—are one of the most reliable road trip activities for our fam. It’s fun to keep refreshing our collection and sometimes slip books onto the @littlefreelibrary shelves we see along the way. Remy finished several books during the drive, including Harry Potter #4, The Name of This Book is Secret, and the Jedi Academy, and it helps that he enjoys reading to Evie (who is on the cusp of being a big reader like her brother!).
